Key points and insights

The recent Legacy Family Tree webinar, AI Video Creation for Genealogy, presented by Johanne Gervais, offered genealogists an innovative look at how artificial intelligence can transform traditional research presentations into engaging, professional-quality videos. With a focus on accessibility, creativity, and efficiency, Gervais demonstrated how AI avatars and video tools can bring genealogical content to life—whether for personal projects, society meetings, or educational outreach. The session highlighted how these tools can simplify video production while expanding the reach and impact of genealogical work in today’s digital landscape.

Key Takeaways:

  • Transforming Presentations into Dynamic Videos: Gervais illustrated how PowerPoint slides, scripts, or even simple ideas can be converted into compelling videos using AI avatars. These avatars narrate, emote, and even speak in multiple languages, enabling researchers to share complex information in a visually engaging way without needing to record themselves.

  • Practical Applications for Genealogy: From explaining Quebec notarial records to creating short-form videos for platforms like YouTube or TikTok, the webinar showcased the versatility of AI tools in making genealogy research more accessible and appealing. Whether for teaching, marketing genealogical services, or simply sharing family history, these methods help genealogists connect with wider audiences.

  • Balancing Benefits and Limitations: While AI-generated videos save time, ensure consistent quality, and offer creative flexibility, Gervais noted challenges such as costs, potential lack of personal touch, and the need for careful review of AI-generated scripts. Nevertheless, the technology continues to evolve rapidly, making it an increasingly valuable resource for family historians.

For genealogists seeking to expand their toolkit, this webinar provides a glimpse into the future of storytelling and research sharing. Viewing the full session will reveal detailed demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, and practical considerations for choosing the right software.

To further enhance your learning, explore the additional resources included in the syllabus. These materials provide deeper insights into software options, costs, and creative strategies—equipping you to confidently experiment with AI video creation in your own genealogical work.

Thank you for the inspiration. Maybe I've missed it, but what software was used in this video?

There's a discussion about this in the Q&A section. She mentions the various types of software that can be used. She also says she used Synthesia as the examples for this webinar.

Great presentation! One of the most fascinating ( if not THE most) webinars I've ever seen. Lots of ideas how to use AI video using PowerPoint, etc., occurred to me. As I suggested in the Chat, it would be a good idea to add under the posted video a caveat (in text) about the asynchronous lip/voice issue that's likely due to bandwidth/streaming differences between GoToMeeting and viewers.

I thought Johanne did a great job presenting the capabilities of this new technology. Yes, there were some minor imperfections in the broadcast, but that did not take away from the content of her presentation. And, by the way, I think she has a lovely voice and image on her own, though I totally relate to not wanting to be the primary voice and image of the presenation! I feel that too....
