Before 1865, free blacks, as well as runaway and emancipated slaves, migrated or escaped to northern states (and Canada), hoping for a “better life” with more opportunities. In this presentation, we explore some of the reasons for this movement and review some of the many helpful records left by these antebellum northern migrants.

Can't wait to read the syllabus.
Excellent info. Very, very informative. I'm always able to glean new information from the webinars. Thank you so much.
She is a great speaker with excellent knowledge of genealogy research. Thanks worth the wait for the webinar.
Excellent presentation. The information Renate Sanders shared was worth the wait. I was not aware of the manumissions being used to prolong servitude in the North. The context she shared about Free Persons of Color is very helpful. There were additional records, like directories, that I have not utilized effectively. I will watch this again.
Excellent presentation!
