About this webinar

MyHeritage DNA offers a key feature missing from its main competitors: a chromosome browser. That tool lets you view the DNA segments that you share with your matches. Export your matching segment data to DNA Painter and you can determine exactly what DNA you inherited from the ancestors you share with your DNA match. MyHeritage DNA even accepts DNA results from other DNA testing companies, so you can import that information into MyHeritage DNA and get matching segment data to use with DNA Painter. In this webinar, you’ll get step-by-step instructions.

Key points and insights

In his informative and user-friendly webinar, “How to Use MyHeritage DNA to Get the Most Out of Your DNA Test Results,” genealogy writer and editor Rick Crume delivered a detailed walkthrough of the robust tools available through MyHeritage DNA. Ideal for both first-time testers and those who’ve previously tested with other services, this session—part of the 24-Hour Genealogy Marathon—demonstrated how MyHeritage’s features go far beyond ethnicity estimates. Crume offered step-by-step guidance on interpreting results, exploring Ancient Origins, using chromosome browsers, and extending your family tree through DNA matches.

Key Takeaways:
  • Explore Rich Ethnicity and Ancient Origins Reports: MyHeritage’s Ethnicity Estimate now includes 79 ethnicities and more than 2,000 genetic groups. A new Ancient Origins report offers insight into your ancestry dating back over 10,000 years, identifying connections to early European farmers, hunter-gatherers, and other ancient populations. These features help situate your DNA story in both historical and geographic context.
  • Maximize DNA Matches and Genetic Tools: Crume explained how to use the MyHeritage chromosome browser, Theories of Family Relativity, and AutoClusters to identify and understand relationships with DNA matches. The platform’s filtering, note-taking, and contact tools make it easier to organize research and explore shared ancestry—especially across international borders.
  • Leverage External Tools Like DNA Painter: By exporting shared segment data from MyHeritage, users can map DNA segments to specific ancestors using the third-party tool DNA Painter. This offers a visual representation of inheritance across generations and can clarify which ancestral lines contributed most to your genetic makeup.
Even if you've tested with another company like AncestryDNA or 23andMe, uploading your results to MyHeritage unlocks new analysis tools and often provides additional international matches. To take full advantage of these unique features and deepen your understanding of genetic genealogy, watch the full webinar now at FamilyTreeWebinars.com.

Be sure to consult the accompanying handout for detailed steps, links, and resources mentioned in the presentation. Whether you’re looking to identify unknown cousins, verify a paper trail, or gain insight into ancient migrations, Rick Crume’s guide to MyHeritage DNA offers a clear and compelling path forward in your research.
