About this webinar

Learn how to harness the power of artificial intelligence to assist in translating, transcribing, and summarizing a variety of genealogy records. A handwritten baptismal record from the 1800s? No problem. A faded newspaper obituary? No problem. We’ll cover the best AI platforms as well as how to craft a solid prompt to get you the results you need.

Key points and insights

In the ever-evolving world of genealogical research, artificial intelligence is quickly becoming an indispensable tool for researchers of all levels. In the sixth installment of the "AI for Genealogists" webinar series, tech expert and genealogist Thomas MacEntee delivered this engaging and highly practical session. This members-only event provided timely insight into how AI platforms are transforming the way family historians interact with historical records—especially those that are faded, handwritten, or in foreign languages.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar:
  • Context is Crucial for AI Accuracy: MacEntee emphasized that successful AI output depends heavily on how well the user frames their prompt. Including information such as document type, date, language, and intended use (e.g., genealogical research) improves results dramatically, especially when translating regional dialects or older handwriting. “Start specific, then refine iteratively,” he advised.
  • AI Platforms Excel at Summarizing Genealogical Books and Records: Using real-time demonstrations, MacEntee showed how tools like ChatGPT (including the forthcoming free 4o version) can ingest entire genealogical books or family histories and extract surnames, migration routes, and generational relationships. These summaries are not only accurate but also customizable into charts and tables—an invaluable shortcut for researchers facing hundreds of unindexed pages.
  • Transcription and Translation Are Now Rapid and Accessible: AI's ability to transcribe difficult handwritten records (like 19th-century affidavits or baptismal certificates) with remarkable speed is a game-changer—particularly for those with vision or mobility challenges. MacEntee also demonstrated how platforms like Gemini and Claude can translate German, French, and even Hebrew or Yiddish texts, with surprising fidelity and speed.
To explore the full depth of AI’s potential for genealogical research, view the complete webinar replay available in the webinar library. MacEntee’s session not only includes step-by-step demonstrations but also shares real-world document examples and answers dozens of viewer questions—making it ideal for both AI novices and experienced users.

Don't forget to download the accompanying 9-page syllabus, which includes best practices, platform comparisons, prompt templates, and citation formats for AI-generated output. Whether you're transcribing your ancestor’s Revolutionary War pension or decoding a baptismal record from 1821, this resource-packed webinar is a must-see for modern genealogists eager to work smarter—and faster.

I always enjoy Thomas' presentations. He is very informative without being pedantic. P.S. My first introduction to Thomas (and Geoff) was on the Legacy Family Tree New England Cruise back in the early 2010s. Thomas escorted several of us to the NEHGS when we were in Boston for the day.
