Key points and insights

In the insightful webinar “Understanding and Benefiting from Process Changes to England's Civil Registration for B/M/D Certificates,” professional genealogist Paul Milner delivers a compelling and practical guide to navigating the evolving landscape of England’s civil registration system. With over 30 years of experience and a specialization in British Isles research, Milner demystifies the intricate processes behind obtaining birth, marriage, and death (BMD) certificates, empowering researchers to leverage updated tools and methodologies to access accurate records more efficiently. As civil registration remains a cornerstone of genealogical discovery, this session is a must-watch for anyone tracing English ancestry.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar:
  • From Paper Trails to Digital Access: Milner details the original process of civil registration initiated in 1837 and outlines how responsibilities shifted from registrars to parents by 1874. He then transitions to modern practices, showcasing how digitized indexes and online ordering through the General Register Office (GRO) now allow for instant access to digital images, eliminating the need for cumbersome physical searches at places like St. Catherine’s House.
  • Avoiding Pitfalls in Index Searches: The webinar emphasizes the layered nature of indexing—where errors can be introduced at various stages, from original record creation to modern re-indexing by services like Ancestry, FamilySearch, and FreeBMD. Milner introduces lesser-known but highly valuable resources such as UKBMD, which uses local registrars’ records to correct or enhance national indexes. He also explains how GRO's revised indexes now include additional data like mother’s maiden names and age at death, increasing precision in search results.
  • Strategic Certificate Ordering and Cost Efficiency: Participants are guided step-by-step through the GRO’s online ordering platform, with Milner demonstrating how to reduce errors, interpret volume/page codes, and choose between digital images, PDFs, and paper certificates based on budget and purpose. He also addresses timing nuances around registration quarters and offers naming conventions for efficient digital organization of downloaded certificates.

Great information! Paul Milner presented at a speed that was very acceptable to watch and explained everything on the screens and why and when to use the information. But best of all, he explained why records might not appear on some sites.

I've got no just ancestors in England, but I've found living breathing family. I am a member of the Essex Society to assist me in my research, but I picked up on some new ways of finding additional entries into my research.
