About this webinar

Legalese. Boilerplate. Obsolete laws. Ancestral idiosyncrasies. The documents our ancestors created are full of such traps. This session uses two typical documents from different regions to illustrate, line by line, how to sort chaff from wheat, interpret deceptive language, and develop clues.

Sure am glad I have a Webinar membership. MIssed the live presentation, and once again caught the video. This one has made me realize just how complex some of the situations can be once we drop our assumptions and do the kind of research. I always learn from EMS, and I learned a LOT this time around! I have an odd situation in the same general area EMS is working on here that I am going to go back to... and I suspect start from scratch. Thank you, Elizabeth, for sharing your experience & skill with people like me. I really want to get this one sorted, and I got all kinds of ideas for how taking some new tacks and extra steps might help me get there!

I am learning a lot from all of the Elizabeth Shown Mills webinars. I have been researching for 40 years and I still am discovering a lot about what I don't know!

ESM always reminds us that we must study all relevant information as part of solving a genealogical problem. That includes understanding the definitions of words used, the laws and customs of the place in the relevant time, and the small details such as whether a person signed with a mark (and what particular mark) or wrote his/her name.

Great information! I need to go back over whatever family legal paperwork I have found.

As always, any presentation by ESM gives the listeners more ideas of things to try and more knowledge that they didn't realize they did not have before.
